Dr Steve Scott

Dr Steve Scott has been a pillar of veterinary care and animal husbandry in Lanark County for over 4 decades, in addition to his countless hours spent in support of community associations in both an official capacity as board member, and behind the scenes as a dedicated volunteer.

Steve grew up on a dairy farm in Dewitts Corners and learned as a child not only the value of hard work but also the even greater importance of community, neighborliness and the value of people and animals. After graduating from Ontario Veterinary College in 1983 and left the school with the commitment “The Craft of the Veterinarian was for the Good of the National.” He worked in southwestern Ontario before returning to his roots and starting a veterinary practice with fellow Perth born & raised veterinarian Jim Ferrier in 1985. Hard work, long hours, determination and true compassion for animals and their owners has made him well known throughout the county and beyond its borders as a veterinarian to consult with. Steve is an OMAFA appointed vet, a Canadian Swine CQA validator, and a dairy ProAction validator. He has knowledge of pork production, dairy herd management, nutrition, bull soundness evaluation, equine, the beef industry and avian care as evidenced by his board commitments. He has been a director and past president of the Central Canada Veterinary Association and held memberships with the College of Veterinarians of Ontario, Ontario Veterinary Association, Canadian Veterinary Medical Association, the Canadian Veterinary Reserve and the Ontario Beekeepers Association.

Steve has been a long-time leader in the Ontario 4-H program, not only in Lanark County but also in Western Ontario. He has an innate sense of how to make learning fun and educational for young people and has inspired many youths to pursue the field of animal medicine and husbandry. Steve has also been a longtime supporter of local 4-H and fair auctions of beef and sheep projects, with his generosity having a positive impact on members both financially and with unabashed encouragement.

In the last few years, Steve has been recruited by the Perth & District Community Foundation to be a board member, providing his understanding of the local agricultural community. This enables the PDCF board to target where funding is best allocated to support farmers who apply. He recently was instrumental in the planning of PDCF’s first trivia night that raised more the $5000 to go towards the organization’s Community Granting fund. Additionally, Steve has volunteered with many local fairs, being a behind the scenes worker for beef and dairy shows and being the vet-on-call for countless events local organizations have put on.

A renowned storyteller, Steve has more time these days to pass on his wisdom and experiences. He continues to work even as he has passed on ownership of the successful practice he built, maintaining the incredible work ethic and passion for agriculture he is known for. He has a true passion to teach farmers how to improve their operations with an eye to optimal animal health and there are generations of farmers and animal owners in Lanark who have benefited from his exceptional ability.
